I begin my sketches by following certain natural gestures. These tend to form curved lines and rounded shapes, organic in nature and reflective of natural phenomena. I work these elements into compositions which are sometimes spontaneous and sometimes visualized beforehand. Through repetition and interaction, the individual parts often form an emergent pattern.

There are two mediums I often work with: oil pastel and acrylic-based ink. When using oil pastel, my process begins with laying a smooth layer of color and then covering it with a layer of a darker color. I scrape and rub through the darker surface, while also adding new layers of color on top, in order to work in both an additive and subtractive manner. For my ink pieces, I soak the paper beforehand and then apply inks with brushes and eyedroppers in layers to achieve saturated color.
